Derwin Andrew Davis

March 25, 1956 - November 26, 2007

Derwin Andrew Davis was known as “Sarg” to much of the courier community/family as he was dressed in full camouflage year round.  He began his celebration of life on March 25, 1956 at Columbia Hospital in the District of Columbia.  In life, he was the son of Helen E. Davis and Amos Pernell.  He departed this life on Monday, November 26, at his residence.

Derwin graduated in 1974 from Wilson Senior High School in D.C.  In 1978 he graduated from Lincoln University receiving a Liberal Arts degree and an award in writing.  He wrote articles for the school newspaper called “One Man’s Opinion.” He enjoyed the rural setting of Lincoln because it gave him the opportunity to hike in the woods, and to enjoy the feeling of freedom.  He loved the outdoors.

After graduation he never sought the nine to five life, but the freedom of something different and so for a brief period, he moved into industrial arts.  He worked for private contractors who remodeled homes and some waterproofing companies.  He quietly learned skills but he was never pleased with the shoddy work they did.  Blending the love of the outdoors, he became a bike courier and on weekends he could be seen driving his green truck going to cut grass.  Much of his grass cutting service was to elderly ladies who loved him like a son.

Derwin loved serving others no matter how much he was encouraged to work in a field where there were good benefits he would quietly listen but he was “happy” doing what he did.  To Derwin, being happy was worth more than the money he would make as a professional wearing a suit and tie.

Derwin was a humble man.  He was an avid reader, dedicated, loyal, dependable, trustworthy, compassionate and possessed many unique talents.

While he was also being encouraged to have a life of his own he was saying the, mother and grandparents, needed him in the house.  So, not only was he a loving and devoted son, he was a buddy to his aged grandfather and patiently picked up and transported his grandmother and her aged friends to Friendship Baptist Church.  He helped nurse his 98-year old grandmother before she died.

Derwin had accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior.  He read the Bible and tried to live within God’s teachings.  When Friendship’s Sunday School distributed a list of desired books for their library he donated most of them and many more.  He quietly left them in the hall area at home so that his mother could take them to church.  He hadn’t joined a church but he would get up early on Sunday’s and before going to work to listen and study God’s word from the TV religious programs.  The TV was on one of those stations when his mother found him.

Derwin Leaves the aching hearts of his mother, Helen; his father, Amos; three sisters, Renee, Malinda, and Michelle; cousins/sisters, Beverly, Diane, Vivian LaVerne, Carolyn, and Lorraine; nieces, nephews, other cousins and friends.

Destination Dublin Grand FinalleyCat Results

So basically, here is the deal:
race 7 featured 5 checkpoints, each sending out 2 p/u’s and accepting 2 deliveries. packages ranged in size from a bank deposit slip to fedex tubes and usps mail tubs. there were 10 jobs total, and racers could make the same delivery up to 5 times. jobs were assigned a $ value from $3 to $8, based on size and distance, and racers were given 2 hours to make as much money as they could. there were 3 main rules: 1- racers could only p/u one package at a time. 2- racers could deliver up to 2 packages at a time, provided they came from different p/u addresses. 3- after visiting any particular checkpoint, racers had to wait at least 5 minutes before making another pick or drop at that checkpoint. there were also 2 bonuses - $10 if a racer could complete the same job 5 times, and $20 for completing all 10 jobs at least once.
the race went as smoothly as a courier race can be expected to run, meaning there were a number of minor mix ups at the checkpoints, as well as some bad math when tabulating the results. so despite what was announced at the party on saturday, the REAL results for the grand finalleycat are:

10. suave $127
9. marco $131 (philly)
8. mark katz $132
7. kyle $136
6. colin $142
5. bruce $144
4. ansel $147 (philly)
3. meredith $149 *top female
2. skander $151
1. john demoncat $156 (sorry i botched your score, buddy! maybe you could retroactively give me the stage victory i deserved to have won in the tour de lemond...)

the last race counted for double points in the series, and provided very dramatic come-from-behind victories in both the male and female categories. the overall results for the series are:

10. kyle: 100pts
9. james w: 103
8. james m: 111
7. bruce: 132
6. john d: 133
5. lola: 141
4. meredith: 151 *wins r/t tix to dublin cmwc
3. brian l: 158
2. soda: 176
1. skander: 187 *wins r/t tix to dublin cmwc

dfl in the series (person with the fewest points after doing all 7 races) was: kevin keefe. kevin wins a custom “panter’s choice” paint job from jill at i.f. and in a stroke of wild luck, kevin also won the custom desalvo track bike in the grand prize raffle! now he has something worth getting a trick paint job on.

thanks to everyone who came out and everyone who helped with all the checkpoints throughout the series!

peace
